What is Cooperative Extension? A Legacy Rooted in Community

For more than a century, Cooperative Extension has helped communities turn research into real change. Learn how Canopy’s PEARS platform helps carry that legacy forward by helping Extension teams across the nation track, share, and strengthen their impact.

Learning That Grows with the Land

For more than 100 years, Cooperative Extension has been helping people turn knowledge into action. Born from the land-grant university movement, Extension connects research with everyday life, supporting farmers, families, youth, and communities across the nation.

That spirit of learning through partnership still drives Extension today. And at Canopy, we’re proud that PEARS helps keep that mission thriving, giving Extension professionals the tools to document programs, measure outcomes, and share the difference they make every day.

From Vision to Action: Where It All Began

Cooperative Extension’s story starts with the land-grant university movement. When Congress passed the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890, it opened the doors of higher education to everyone, not just the privileged few. These universities  focused on practical knowledge in  agriculture, engineering, and science that could strengthen everyday life.

But an important question soon followed: How could all that research reach the people who needed it most?

The answer came with the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 , which established  the Cooperative Extension System as a partnership between universities, the USDA, and local governments. Together, they brought education directly into communities.

That cooperative model, learning with people, not just for them, remains at the heart of Extension and at the heart of PEARS. We built PEARS to carry that same principle into the digital age: helping programs turn research and data into action that makes a difference.  looks outward, reaching further to discover and build knowledge that extends beyond one  setting.

The Spirit of Extension: Meeting People Where They Are

Extension professionals know that meaningful change starts with relationships. They don’t just deliver information, they build trust, listen deeply, and find solutions alongside the communities they serve.

Whether its guiding a 4-H robotics team, helping a beginning farmer build soil health, or teaching families how to stretch their grocery budgets, Extension work is deeply human. Each connection, each conversation, and each workshop helps turn ideas into impact.

PEARS helps make that impact visible. Instead of information scattered across spreadsheets and local files, teams can capture their efforts in one place; tracking outcomes, reporting results, and celebrating growth.  That means Extension professionals spend less time wrangling data, and more time doing what they do best: helping people grow.

From field demonstrations to hands-on community learning, Extension’s commitment to working alongside communities has endured across generations.

Continuing the Legacy of Shared Learning

The roots of Cooperative Extension run deep, but its growth continues today. As communities face new challenges, from food insecurity and digital access to climate resilience, Extension continues to evolve, guided by the enduring belief that learning works best when it is shared.

At Canopy, we see PEARS as part of that ongoing story. The platform helps Extension teams:

  • Track programs and partnerships across counties and states
  • Share impact stories with funders and stakeholders
  • Use data to strengthen decisions and celebrate success

In other words, PEARS helps good work grow by carrying forward the same cooperative spirit that shaped Extension more than a century ago.

Looking Ahead: The Power of Shared Knowledge

Extension has always been more than a program. It’s a promise that knowledge should serve people, not stay on the shelf.

Here’s to the educators, farmers, youth leaders, and families who keep that promise alive, and to the tools helping them show just how powerful learning can be when it starts in community.
